Magnifica Humanitas

“Artificial intelligence should not be considered as merely yet another theme to be studied or an emergency to be managed, but rather as a development that challenges the categories of Social Doctrine from within, entailing its further development in fidelity to the Gospel.”

Pope Leo XIV, MH 17

Faith, Humanity and Artificial Intelligence

A pastoral resource for prayer, reflection and conversation on what it means to remain fully human in a digital age.

Artificial intelligence and digital technologies are now shaping the way we communicate, learn, work, pray, make decisions and understand ourselves. For some, this brings excitement and possibility. For others, it brings anxiety, confusion or a sense that things are changing too quickly.

This pastoral resource invites individuals, families, schools, parish groups and communities to pause, pray and reflect on these changes in the light of faith.

PASTORAL RESOURCE

Inspired by Magnifica Humanitas, the resource places the dignity of the human person at the centre. It does not simply ask how we use technology. It asks a deeper question: what kind of people are we becoming, and what kind of world are we building?

The resource uses two biblical images. The first is the Tower of Babel, where human ambition becomes closed in on itself, leading to confusion and division. The second is the rebuilding of Jerusalem, where people work together, each contributing their gifts, to restore a wounded city. These images help us reflect on the choices before us today: whether technology will serve power, isolation and control, or whether it can help build communion, justice, care and hope.

The pastoral kit includes short reflections, Scripture passages, quotations for meditation, personal and community questions, practical activities, moments of prayer and resources for adults, young people and children. It can be used in parish groups, school settings, pastoral councils, youth ministry, adult faith formation, prayer groups or for personal reflection at home.

At its heart, Magnifica Humanitas reminds us that true progress never leaves the human person behind. Human dignity does not depend on ability, wealth, productivity or status but comes from God.

Use it for personal prayer, parish reflection, school discussion or community formation.

May this resource help us to use every gift of human creativity wisely, so that technology may serve life, deepen communion and help us recognise again the magnificent humanity revealed fully in Christ.

Archbishop Eamon’s Pastoral Reflection on AI for World Day of Social Communications 2026

In advance of the release of Magnifica Humanitas, Archbishop Eamon Martin offered a pastoral reflection for World Communications Day 2026 inviting parishes, schools, families and all communicators to reflect on Pope Leo XIV’s message for World Day of Social Communications 2026, Preserving Human Voices and Faces.

In a time when artificial intelligence can imitate voices, images and emotions, this resource reminds us that Christian communication begins with recognising the person before us: someone created in the image and likeness of God, with a face to be honoured and a voice to be heard. It encourages us to use technology wisely, truthfully and humanely, so that our words and digital spaces may serve communion, dignity and the Gospel.
